Shannon Elizabeth Joins American Reunion

The American Pie series is an odd series. The first film, which made waves for its infamous pie scene, wasn't a bad teen sex comedy. Then along came number two, which wasn't too bad either. And then there was American Wedding, and despite being the third installment of what was essentially a milked franchise, it still wasn't a terrible movie. Now we're at the odd part. American Reunion is in the works and is being referred to as the fourth film in the franchise. And while it will be the fourth in the franchise to feature the principal cast, it's a little weird to completely ignore the four spinoff films that have been released. If you take those into consideration, American Reunion will be the eighth film in the series. Hooray for franchises!

Is a third Riddick Film Happening?

I was first "introduced" to Vin Diesel in 2001's The Fast and The Furious. While he isn't a bad actor, I wasn't blown away by his performance. There was something about him though, something about that gravelly voice and bald, round head that was familiar. It wasn't long before I realized that this was the same actor who portrayed the intimidating, interesting, and scene-stealing criminal Richard B. Riddick in the science fiction horror Pitch Black only a year prior. Now that's a character. And with Keith David in the supporting cast, Pitch Black is almost too intense of a film.

2004 saw the release of The Chronicles of Riddick, a spinoff of Pitch Black featuring everyone's favorite mass murderer. David Twohy, director of Pitch Black, returned to helm this sequel. The film wasn't treated very kindly by critics and received a 29% rating on Rotten Tomatoes. It also failed at the domestic box office, but its worldwide take came in around $115 million, just under its budget of $120 million.

Despite not being a smash hit, plans to make a third Riddick film creep ever closer to fruition thanks to Diesel and Twohy's love for the character. Late last year, Diesel commented that the film was still in development. Last week Diesel was quoted as saying that, despite having to take a pay cut, the film might get made this summer. And now David Twohy has released a rather general, encouraging statement that includes rhetoric like "hurdles seem to be dropping," "final turn is being rounded," and "we've reached a critical mass of enthusiasm and resource needed to launch a movie."

By all means, Mr. Twohy, launch that movie.

Jim Carrey Might do Dumb and Dumber and Bruce Almighty Sequels

Gods be good, a sequel to Dumb and Dumber? Don't tease me. While promoting his latest film, Mr. Popper's Penguins, veteran funnyman Jim Carrey expressed interest in returning to some of his more popular films, specifically Bruce Almighty and Dumb and Dumber.

Despite both films already having Carrey-less sequels, the prospects of Carrey-filled sequels is exciting. Well, a proper sequel to Bruce Almighty is exciting, a proper sequel to Dumb and Dumber is enough to get one frothing at the mouth. Though to be honest, I haven't the faintest idea of what they would do in a Bruce Almighty sequel. Bruce had a lesson to learn, he learned it, and he moved on. But what am I saying? If Jim Carrey is willing to do a sequel to a film that earned almost a quarter of a billion dollars, they'll find a way.

The real news here is the potential Dumb and Dumber sequel. The 1994 comedy has amassed an enormous cult following and 2003's prequel, which starred neither Carrey or original star Jeff Daniels, did very little to satiate the need for more Lloyd Christmas and Harry Dunne. What's even more exciting is that Carrey wasn't the first person to comment on a sequel. Earlier this year, co-director Bobby Farrelly said that the "ball is in motion" to get Carrey and Daniels together again.

Am I drooling? I think I'm drooling.

Indian Filmmakers Cannot Compete With International Moviemakers In The Use Of Technology

“RA.One” is Shah Rukh Khan’s
most ambitious project and he is
trying to make it a world-class
film, but at the same time he
feels Indian filmmakers cannot
compete with international
moviemakers in the use of
technology.
“I don’t think we are anywhere
close to competing with
international filmmakers. I don’t
mean to offend anyone. We
have great storytelling, good
technology and do great stuff…
we are the largest film
producing nation in the world!
“But having said that, when it
comes to technology in films like
‘Batman’, ‘Superman’ and
‘Spiderman’, I don’t think we
should even try to compare
ourselves to them as yet. They
are way ahead. Their resources
are really huge compared to
what we can do,” Shah Rukh
told reporters here.
“RA.One” is directed by
Anubhav Sinha and the 45-year-
old plays the superhero in the
film. His costume, described as
stiff and heavy, has been
designed by a team of
specialists in Los Angeles.
“It’s fortunate that I have the
resource to take ‘RA.One’ to a
certain level. I don’t have the
resources to take it to a bigger
level yet, but if the market for
Indian films increases, of course
we can do it.‘RA.One’ is the first
step towards that,” said the
actor-producer who is co-
producing it with Eros
Entertainment.
The budget of “RA.One” is said
to be over Rs.100 crore and
Shah Rukh said he might have
certain stunts in 3D to woo his
younger audiences.
“RA.One”, which is replete with
visual effects, also promises to
change the movie-going
experience for cinegoers here.
For the first time, the Dolby
surround 7.1 system is
reportedly being installed in
several multiplexes in the run-up
to the film’s release.
The technical team of “RA.One”,
including Oscar-winning sound
engineer Resul Pookutty, headed
by Shah Rukh will be in Los
Angeles this month to work on
the special sound effects.
Internationally acclaimed
filmmaker Shekhar Kapur has
already showered praise on the
film after seeing its 30-second
trailer, saying“RA.One” has
raised bar on VFX technology in
Indian cinema.
It’s payback time for him, says
Shah Rukh, who plans to cash in
on the Diwali season by
releasing the film, which also
stars Arjun Rampal and Kareena
Kapoor, Oct 26.
“I have worked for 20 years in
this industry and I owe my life
to it. I feel this is what I would
like to give back– I give this
technology to all new directors
and actors so that they feel‘Yes,
we can do it’ and much cheaper
than Hollywood. I hope the
scope and audiences of Indian
films increases and we get more
money to make good films as
wonderful as‘Iron Man’ and
‘Spiderman’,” he added.
Shah Rukh is not hopeful of his
film being picked as India’s
official entry for the Oscars, but
he will be content with a
welcome response from the
audiences and a Filmfare award
or two!
“I don’t think it’s our choice that
which film must go for the
Oscars from our country. I don’t
know the process…I don’t know
if popular cinema should go for
it, or our parallel cinema, like
‘Paheli’ was. But franky, I don’t
think this film (‘RA.One’) will be
chosen as an Oscar nomination
from our country,” he said.
“I think I’ll be happy with one or
two Filmfare awards for the VFX
in my film,” he added in his
trademark witty style.
Shah Rukh’s earlier production
venture “Paheli” was short-
listed as India’s official entry to
Oscars by the Film Federation of
India (FFI) in 2006.
“I was shocked when ‘Paheli’
was selected,” said SRK.
